Software development is a funny thing. When I started SeeThisSpot.com, all I was looking for was a playground for me to show off my skills, learn new skills, and generally have something to hang my hat on. So what happened?
Somewhere along the line I got lost. What I imagined:
- Responsive design
- High performance using the latest technology
- Simple maintenance
- High traffic after a little bit of telling my friends about the site
- Fame and riches
What I ended up with:
- Responsive design
- A bloated solution that used PHP and a framework I had never heard of until starting to mash stuff together
- Utter confusion when it came to resolving bugs, like the one affecting the site right now (don’t ask)
- Very little traffic, even with the help of a friend
- No fame and or riches that I didn’t already have
So, 1 out of 5 ain’t bad, right? No! Perhaps this post will actually out me as a bit of a failure at what I set out to achieve, but like I said, software development is a funny thing, and in my experience nearly all of the projects I’ve worked on have gone through similar problems. It’s no surprise (to me at least), that my own first ‘real’ project suffered the same problems, and I hope that writing all of this down helps make it clear what I need to do to make SeeThisSpot a fun project for me to work on again, AND give me the playground I was looking for initially.
How I go about making these changes will follow this week. It’s my early new years resolution to make this blog more for me, and less pretending that half the world is awaiting my next post!
